Join Rapidly Growing Union Movement, Become First HBCU Adjuncts to Form Union

In a significant victory for adjunct faculty across the nation, Howard University adjuncts in Washington, DC, have overwhelmingly voted to form a union with SEIU. Howard’s 176 adjuncts have become the first part-time faculty members at a historically black college or university to have a faculty union. They also join a majority of adjuncts in Washington, DC and a rapidly growing number of part-time faculty who are joining unions across the country.

Durbin, Harkin Aim to Improve For-Profit Oversight

Senator Dick Durbin and Senator Tom Harkin have introduced legislation aimed at improving federal coordination of oversight of the for-profit college industry. The Proprietary Education Oversight Coordination Improvement Act would establish interagency oversight committee and improve enforcement of federal laws and regulations of the for-profit industry. The Act is being introduced in the House by U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings.

SEIU, veterans groups and elected officials testified at a hearing on proposed regulations of for-profit universities held by Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley yesterday in Boston. The new regulations were proposed by Coakley’s office in November, and are designed to bring greater transparency to the for-profit universities in Massachusetts by requiring greater disclosure from the for-profits while also curbing deceptive recruiting and advertising practices.
