Policy Update

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced legislation that will help adjunct faculty access the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF). The Adjunct Faculty Loan Fairness Act would make a tremendous impact on the lives of thousands of adjunct and contingent faculty, who now make up a majority of America’s college instructors and more than half of whom work part-time. To listen to a call held with Senator Durbin and adjunct activists from AAN held on Tuesday, August 5th, dial (800) 475-6701 and enter access Code 333522 to hear a recording of the call. The recording will be available until September 5th.

Online Conference

In mid-September (date to be announced shortly), AAN will be hosting a daylong online conference on the nuts and bolts of adjunct organizing and taking action. Presenters will include Lillian Taiz, president of the California Faculty Association, who will talk about how CFA has become a force within the California State University and Anne McLeer, director of research at SEIU Local 500 and a former adjunct who helped organize George Washington kicking off the national Adjunct Action movement. There will also be a presentation by SEIU’s legal team on knowing your legal rights, and a conversation about the basics of organizing.
