Section 1. Name
This project shall be known as Adjunct Action Network (“AAN”).
Section 2. Purpose
In order to build a national movement to advocate for good jobs for adjunct and contingent faculty and improved educational outcomes for students and communities, Adjunct Action Network has been established by order of the International President in accordance with Article XIV, Section 5 of the Constitution and Bylaws of the Service Employees International Union (“SEIU”).
The Adjunct Action Network brings together adjuncts, students, parents, and allies to fight for good jobs for contingent faculty and improved educational outcomes for our students. Through discussion, trainings, and action, we will advance an organizing and advocacy agenda that includes making college more affordable, increasing institutional accountability and addressing the troubling trend toward the corporatization of academia.
Together, as members of the Adjunct Action Network, we will build a strong voice to improve the learning environment for students and take on the crisis in higher education that has left us, as teachers and scholars, on the margins of the university system.
Adjunct Action Network shall not represent members or any other individuals in collective bargaining with employers concerning grievances, labor disputes, wages, rates of pay, hours of work, or other terms and conditions of employment.
The purpose of this Protocol is to provide operating guidelines for Adjunct Action Network. The Protocol may be amended at any time by the International President of SEIU upon the input and advice of the SEIU Public Division.
Section 3. Membership
Members of Adjunct Action Network shall be associate members of the Service Employees International Union. Any individual who supports the purpose of Adjunct Action Network and is not an employer or association of employers or agent thereof, nor deals with any labor organization concerning conditions of work under any law of the United States relating to the employment of any employees, is eligible to apply. An individual shall become a member of Adjunct Action Network by executing a membership application and paying an annual membership fee. Associate membership shall be valid for a period of 12 months, and may be renewed by informing Adjunct Action Network.
Section 4. Dues
All associate members of Adjunct Action Network shall pay the annual membership fee, as set by the International President of SEIU. The fee may be lowered or waived by the International President.
Revenues derived from the membership fees will go to Adjunct Action Fund. Adjunct Action Fund shall be used to support the purpose of Adjunct Action Network.
Section 5.
The SEIU International President shall have the power to appoint two Coordinators and any other necessary positions. Michelle Healy and Malini Cadambi are hereby appointed as the first Coordinators of Adjunct Action Network.
The Coordinators shall have the following duties:
1. The Coordinators shall have general supervision and direction over the organizing, political, education, training and community activities of Adjunct Action Network.
2. To call meetings of the members of Adjunct Action Network and to preside over all such meetings.
3. The Coordinators shall have such other authority and responsibility as her/his position requires and as are consistent with the Constitution and Bylaws of the Service Employees International Union.
